BALRI RAKSHAK YOJNA:

Balri Rakshak Yojna, a welfare scheme for the cause of the girl-child has been launched in Punjab with the following objectives:

Ø            To encourage the birth of girls to balance the skewed sex-ratio in the state as there has been a considerable decline in the child sex-ratio (0-6 years) during the 1991 to 2001 decade.

JANANI SURAKSHA YOJANA (JSY)

The Government of India has launched a new scheme known by the name of Janani Suraksha Yojna from the year 2005-06 under 100% Centrally Sponsored Schemes. In earlier years National Maternity Benefit Scheme was in vogue in which Rs. 500/- cash assistance used to be given to the pregnant ladies above 19 years of age upto 2 live birth belonging to below poverty line. Now from 2005-06 the Govt. of India has enhanced the cash assistance and has further rendered some new features to the old scheme.

National Rural Health Mission

The National Rural Health Mission was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on 12th April 2005 with the objectives of providing  effective health care to the entire rural population in the country with special  focus  on  18  states  which  have  weak public  health indicators. The Mission is an articulation of the commitment of the Government to raise public spending on Health from 0.9% of GDP to 2-3% of GDP, over the next 5 years. It aims to undertake architectural correction of the health system to enable it to effectively handle increased allocations as promised under the National Common Minimum Programme.

PROBLEMS & PROSPECTS FOR IMPROVING THE PUBLIC HEALTHCARE SERVICE DELIVERY

Substantial progress towards set objectives for the 10th Plan aimed to provide essential primary healthcare services particularly to the under privilege and underserved segments along with devolution of responsibilities and funds for the healthcare to PRIs was established in the State. The State of Punjab devised a alternate healthcare delivery system by which it has been ensured to provide better healthcare services in the rural areas where percentage of population living in poverty is much higher.
